Types of electric heat cable and their use cases
There are two main types of electric heat cables:
Constant Wattage
Constant wattage electric heat cables have the same wattage per linear foot across their entire length. This means that it is generally not affected by changes in ambient or pipe content temperatures and provides a constant output. In most situations, the cable continues to pump heat into the pipe or other type of vessel that is being maintained. It’s important to note that constant wattage cables require some kind of control device to prevent overheating and burnout.
This type of cable is suitable for internal and external temperature maintenance in hot water lines, oil and chemical lines and more.
Self-Regulating
Self regulating electric heat cables adjust the power output in relation to the surface temperature and conditions in the environment. This means that they can be used without a control device as they won’t overheat. Note that if you require a specific temperature, a control device must be used.
These are suitable for use for front protection for pipes, temperature maintenance of process pipes, snow and ice clearance and more. An example of this type of heating cable is the AC8-051-060-6FLEX from HTS Amptek, which is suitable when temperature requirements are below those of traditional heating tapes. This cable is able to withstand temperatures of 185°F/85°C and is a low-exposure trace heating cable made with metallic overbraid and a polyolefin jacket. Its multilayer construction means that it is moisture and corrosion-resistant and can maintain flexibility in most applications.
