Ebm-papst Fan Motor Wiring Diagram and Installation Guide

Ebm-papst Fan Motor Wiring Diagram and Installation Guide

Fans are a piece of equipment within an AC or DC cooling system that features blades that function to circulate air and regulate temperatures in different types of industrial machinery.

Ebm-papst is one of the chief manufacturers of fans and compact fans and motors. As one of the leading ebm-papst distributors in the UAE, Preferred Spares offers industrial automation machinery and spare parts to suit a range of industrial applications.

Keep reading to find out about the different types of fans available, their applications, and guidance on installation.

Types of fans from ebm-papst

Cooling fans play an important role in ensuring optimal performance and temperature of various electronic devices. There are different types of compact fans available for various applications, so it’s important to know which one is the most suitable for your specific needs.

Axial fans

Axial fans offer high air flow with a medium/high pressure build up. The air flow within this type of fan is similar to that of a propeller, and conducts air in an axial direction (i.e. parallel to the axis of rotation). In cooling equipment, these fans feature external housing and an electric motor in the fan hub. They offer a compact design that allows you to maximise space and the flange is equipped with mounting holes for easy installation.

Diagonal fans

Diagonal fans allow high flow rate with relatively high pressure build up. They may seem, at first glance, slightly different from axial fans. The intake of air is axial, but the exhaust is diagonal. The shape of the wheel and housing is conical which results in more pressurisation. They are the same size as axial fans and offer similar performance, but they are distinguished by the fact that they produce lower operating noise when used at high pressures.

Centrifugal fans

This type of fan provides high pressure build up at a limited flow rate. The majority of cooling problems can be resolved using an axial or diagonal fan, but centrifugal fans are more effective if the required cooling air has to be conducted at an angle of 90 degrees or if high pressure if required.

Tangential fans

Tangential fans deliver high flow rate at low pressure. They’re used mostly for large surface air flow in certain devices, and the air flows through impellers twice in the radial direction. Whirls are formed in the roller because of the vanes that guarantee a steady flow of air.

Ebm-papst offers a range of different types of cooling fans for various applications. Their range of fans are compact, quiet and offer reliable performance. They can be adapted to any cooling situation and intelligently networked to be compatible with digitised industrial machinery.

Fan installation guide and wiring diagram

The ideal operating point can be found at the intersection between the fan and loss curves. This is true whether or not the fan is positioned at the air intake or exhaust part of the device. It’s important to ensure the required flow rate as well as several additional aspects when correctly installing the fan component.

The intake air currents of a compact cooling fan are laminar (occuring along constant streamlines, without any turbulence) and comprise almost the entire suction area. In comparison, the exhaust air of a fan is typically turbulent and flows in a preferred direction (for example, axial for an axial fan).

Exhaust turbulence will intensify the heat transfer from components operating within the air flow, so it’s important to mount the fan at the air intake side of the device for optimal cooling and heating. This is also beneficial as the fan will not be subject to dissipated heat emanating from the device to prolong its life expectancy.

When first operating the fan once installed, you may notice that the air flow rate in the device is lower than expected. This can occur due to the fact that values stated in any installation manual are determined under optimum and constant measurement conditions, which may not be the case in reality.

Ideal mounting conditions are often not possible in practice. Often, cooling fans must be mounted close to other components or other cabinet panels which can result in restrictions to intake and exhaust currents which can lead to diminished air flow and increased noise level.

Fans are particularly impacted by obstructions that are placed directly in front of the output section, so upon installation, try to ensure that the distance between the fan and other components is at least equal to the fan’s installation depth.

Note that appropriate safety measures should also be taken when installing a cooling fan. For instance, the turning rotor and operational high speeds have a significant risk of injury, so be sure that installation was carried out correctly and with suitable protective facilities before using the device in question.
